Rahul hits out at PM over farm laws

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not respect farmers and wants to tire out those protesting against the contentious agricultural laws.

The party staged a nationwide agitation demanding the repeal of the three bills, against which various farm unions have been protesting across Delhi borders since November 26 last year.

Rahul, who was accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, led the ‘Kisan Adhikar March’ in the national capital by gheraoing the Raj Niwas. He alleged that the talks that are being held with the protesting farmer leaders are part of the government’s delaying tactics.

“Narendra Modi does not have basic respect for farmers. He does not even care if over 100 farmers die. He thinks he has the power and the protesting farmers will tire out after some days, but they will not relent,” the former party chief told reporters.

“The talks are being held only to delay. PM Modi thinks he has the power and will tire the farmers out, but he is mistaken,” he added.

Continuing his attack against the Centre, Rahul said: “Have you ever heard about the word Maya? Everything is Maya, media-created Maya and this myth will soon end. Just wait and watch what will happen the day this Maya will end.”

The duo also visited Jantar Mantar where Congress MPs Ravneet Singh Bittu, Jasbir Singh Gill and some other legislators from Punjab have been staging the protest for over a month.

“They (the government) do not know the strength of farmers, they will not relent. PM Modi does not understand this. Had he understood this, the government would have taken back the laws today itself,” he said.

Asked about objections being raised over the proposed tractor rally by protesting farmers on Republic Day, he said, “If farmers want to come out and take out a tractor parade on Republic Day, what is the harm in it.” “The prime minister misunderstands, he thinks this country is run by four to five industrialists, who control him,” he said.

Meanwhile, several Haryana Congress leaders, including former chief minister Bhupinder Sing Hooda, were detained by the police during their marched towards the Raj Bhawan in the state. Police put up barricades to stop the protesters from moving towards the Raj Bhawan. Hooda and his supporters were detained. The Congress leader said that they would force the BJP-led central government to repeal the farm laws.
