This FIR was lodged on the complaint of senior sub-inspector (SSI) Amarnath Yadav posted at the Hazratganj police station. In his complaint, Yadav alleged that he received information that clips of the web series, which are allegedly defamatory against a particular group in the society, were being circulated widely on various social media platforms.
On investigating, he found that the video clips were part of the Amazon Prime web series Tandav, which was released last Friday.
Based on the complaint, the police registered the case under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups), 295 (defiling place of worship with intent to insult religion), 505 (statement conducing public mischief), 469 (forgery on purpose of harming reputation) of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the IT Act.
“Action will be taken against the accused if the complaint is found to be true,” said the officer.
Similar complaints against Tandav were also lodged in Sitapur and Rae Bareli districts where police are probing the matter.
In a tweet, Mrityunjay Kumar said, “The murder of the freedom of expression is not seen. Under the leadership of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh police is committed to protecting the interests of the people of the state. In such a situation, showing (the) force drinking alcohol and inciting a riot is indecent. Strict action should be taken against the makers of Tandav.”
In a separate tweet, Kumar said, “One should keep in mind that it is not easy to play with the emotions of the people in Uttar Pradesh.”.
Shalabhmani Tripathi , who is also a media advisor to the Uttar Pradesh chief minister, in a tweet, said, “Playing with the public sentiments will not be tolerated. In the guise of a cheap web series Tandav, hate is being spread. FIR has been registered against the entire team of web series Tandav in Yogi Adityanath’s Uttar Pradesh. Those named in the FIR will be arrested soon.”
Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Monday demanded removal of the objectionable portion from the web series Tandav.
In a tweet, the BSP chief said protests were being registered over some scenes of Tandav, which hurts religious and ethnic sentiments.
It would be appropriate to remove the objectionable portion so that peace, harmony and mutual brotherhood were not disturbed in the country, she said.
