VARANASI : A case was registered against the producer of the web series Mirzapur and Amazon Prime on Monday for hurting religious sentiments and social beliefs in the Mirzapur district of eastern UP, the Mirzapur police said.

A police officer said that the case was registered following a complaint by Arvind Chaturvedi, who alleged that his religious sentiments and social beliefs were hurt by the show.

The web series defamed Mirzapur district since it was full of abuse and showed illicit relations, Chaturvedi alleged in his complaint.

The case was registered under Sections 395a (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class), Section 505 (statements or content publishes to creating public enmity), Section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act, the police officer said.

Superintendent of police, Mirzapur, Ajay Singh confirmed the development.

In a recent tweet, Apna Dal (Sonelal) chief and Mirzapur MP Anupriya Patel said Mirzapur was developing fast under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Yogi Adityanath.

“This is a centre of harmony. But Mirzapur web series is defaming the area by portraying it as a violent region. This web series is spreading casteist hatred, too. Being the MP of Mirzapur, I demand that there should be a probe in the matter and action should be taken against the web series,” she tweeted.
