PRAYAGRAJ : Worried over the increase in suicide cases the Sangam city in the last few years, a team of psychiatrists from Colvin hospital will now identify suicide points here where boards carrying motivational messages will be put up.

The boards, to come up both in urban and rural areas soon, will also have helpline numbers on which such persons can seek help. The aim is to help suicideprone people overcome the sad feelings that lead them to extreme step due to a number of reasons, including failure in exams, business, love affair, besides depression among others.

Dr Ishanya Raj, clinical psychologist at the Colvin hospital, said some people surrender before the situation and take the extreme step without giving a second thought. “They even ignore the problems and pain their kin will have to face due to their step,” she added.

Senior psychiatrist Dr Rakesh Paswan said motivation given in the last moment may play a crucial role in changing the minds of such people. “A proposal is being sent to chief medical officer and after receiving the approval further steps will be taken,” Dr Paswan added.

Besides consuming poisonous substances, hanging themselves and jumping before moving trains, people in large numbers usually use bridges to jump into rivers to commit suicide. Maximum number of suicide attempts have been reported from New Yamuna bridge while many others also take the extreme step by jumping into the river from Shastri and Phaphamau bridges here.
