PRAYAGRAJ : Two of the accused allegedly involved in the attack on RSS khand karyavah (block secretary) Dinesh Maurya in Mauaima area on Friday morning were arrested after an encounter with a police team late on Saturday night.

One of the accused received a bullet injury in his leg during cross firing and was later admitted to SRN hospital, police said. Raids were being carried out to arrest the other three named accused, police officials added.

Superintendent of police (trans-Ganga) Dhawal Jaiswal said on the complaint of Dinesh’s brother Rakesh Maurya, a named FIR was lodged against Atiq, Abul, Wajid, Gulfam and Mashoor.

It was alleged that they had enmity with Dinesh as he was helping his friend in a case against them. Acting on a tip-off on Saturday night, a team of crime branch and Mauaima police cornered Atiq and Abul and asked them to surrender. However, they opened fire on the police team and tried to escape on their bike.

Cops returned fire resulting in bullet injury to Atiq. Two country-made firearms, ammunition and a bike were recovered from them.

“Atiq has been admitted to the hospital while Abul is being questioned further in connection with the attack. Both have past criminal record,” the SP added.

A resident of Markhamau village, Dinesh Maurya, in his 30s, is also a contractual employee of UP state roadways sorporation.

On Friday morning, he was returning home from duty when four miscreants on a bike waylaid and shot at Maurya in his head and fled the spot. He was rushed to SRN hospital where he underwent an operation.

Police outpost incharge Ajeet Singh was attached to police lines for negligence in connection with the attack.
