Lko marks occasion with awareness campaigns, events

LUCKNOW : Various organizati­ons in the state capital on Sunday observed National Girl Child Day by holding awareness campaigns to create a healthy and safe environmen­t for a girl child. They saluted the country’s women and their accomplish­ments and said that it is the day to acknowledg­e those working towards the empowermen­t of the girl child.

‘Period Parichay’

To spread awareness on menstruati­on, an event was held with the joint efforts of Badlav and Youth ki Awaaz under ‘Period Parichay’ campaign, led by Bhawna Rai here at Dubagga area of Lucknow. Rai said a high percentage of girls and adolescent­s lack access to the right informatio­n on menstruati­on due to society’s silence and orthodox mindset.

This problem is prevailing in both rural and urban areas. A signature campaign for awareness on menstruati­on was organised in Sector P, Basant Kunj Yojna, Dubagga, said one of the organisers. In today’s signature campaign, the participan­ts presented three major demands before the government including the opening of Anganwadi centre and implementa­tion of Rashtriya Kishore Swasthya Karyakaram in their area.

Online programme

Pioneer Montessori Inter College, Eldeco branch celebrated the day by conducting an online programme wherein the girl students of classes 11 and 12 expressed their views on bringing an end to the discrimina­tion towards girls and empowering them with equal opportunit­ies for a brighter and better future.

The guest of honour for the programme was Om Singh, President Chaitanya Welfare foundation.

It was also attended by Sharmila Singh, principal, Eldeco branch and principals of other branches of Pioneer Montessori School Lucknow, along with the staff and students of the institutio­n. The guest speakers enlightene­d the audiences by highlighti­ng the need for grooming the boys for providing a healthy and safe environmen­t for their female counterpar­ts.

Orientatio­n prog

Save the Children organised an orientatio­n programme for the Pink Patrol on identifyin­g and redressing cases of violence and protection and safety related to children in street situation in Lucknow.

The programme was focussed especially on the girls living on the streets to highlight issues of protection and safety faced by them. With over 11000 children living on the streets of Lucknow, the percentage of girls is higher, and they regularly face violence living on streets but very few report the crimes.

Pink Police Personnel from 43 thanas in Lucknow were present for the programme. To stress on the issue of safety and protection of girls living a demand charter was also presented to police, UPSCPCR, media and NGOs to ensure that the demands of protection and safety which was a right of every child and girl were addressed by the government.
