Meerut throwers hog limelight in state championsh­ip

LUCKNOW: Meerut throwers hogged the limelight in the State Throw Championsh­ip as three of them won gold medals in different events, at the Kaushambi Stadium on Sunday. Rahul Singh, Kiran Baliyan and Shivani won gold medals.

Rajhul finished top in discus throw with a throw of 49.31 metre, whereas Baliyan and Shivani excelled in women’s shot put and discus throw events. Others who won gold medals on Sunday, included Abhihek Singh, Meraj Ali, Rishabh Nehra, Divya Shandilya and Kumari Saloni.

A six-wicket haul by Prashant Mohan helped the Kashi Patrakar Sangh (KPS) lift the State Media Cup-2021 Cricket Tournament, defeating hosts and defending champions Lucknow by eight runs, at the Guru Govind Singh Sports College ground. Lucknow’ skipper Rajiv Bajpai scored a brilliant 46 but couldn’t help the side win the encounter.

Batting first after being sent in, KPS scored 124/6 in 20 overs with opener Ashutosh hitting a brilliant 55 with the help of three fours. Anil Kushwaha (23) and Manoj Kumar (22) were the other key run getters. For Lucknow, Rohit Singh and Rajeev Anand shared four wickets between them.

In reply, Lucknow despite having a five start, could score 116 in 19.3 overs. Prashant Mohan, who finished with 6/22 in 3.3 overs, was later named man-of-the-match and also the player of the tournament. Rohit Kumar Singh (best bowler), Ashutosh (best batsman), Sharad Deep (best keeper) were given special awards.

IAS Rajesh Kumar Pandey, UP’s director sports RP Singh gave away the winners and runners-up trophies respective­ly. Sanjeev Mendi, director of Green Gas Limited, Vivek Singh of Box LNG and Anil Aggarwal, director of St Joseph’s School also graced the closing ceremony.

KESARWANI HANDBALL Lucknow men and women won the 2nd Ashok Kesarwani Memorial Divisional Handball Championsh­ip, at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium here on Sunday. Lucknow men defeated Mohanlalga­nj 16-13, whereas Lucknow women beat SSB by 5-4.

Earlier, the UP Handball Associatio­n, felicitate­d the newly elected office-bearers of the Handball Federation of India on the occasion.
