AGRA: Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) vice-president Jayant Chaudhary on Saturday gave a call for unity among farmers to fight those defaming them.

“How can one name farmers as traitors?” asked Chaudhary at a mahapanchayat at a college ground in Bajna village of Mathura district. Thousands of farmers participated in the meeting. Besides RLD leaders, Sanjay Lathar of the Samajwadi Party (SP) was present at the mahapanchayat. The leaders asked more and more farmers to strengthen the farmers’ agitation on the Delhi borders and support Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait.

“We have to stay united in this fight and maintain our cool. One feels bad seeing someone crying, but if a farmer can weep, then he can also fight the wrong,” said Chaudhary. He informed the gathering that his father and RLD national president Ajit Singh had spoken to Rakesh Tikait on the phone and assured him all support.

“We might have lost elections but would not let farmers be defeated. One should remember that in the past also, farmers were stopped at Boat Club in Delhi,” he said.

Jayant Chaudhary reminded the gathering about his grandfather former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh who used to take up the farmers’ cause with India’s first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. “BJP leaders are abusing farmers who should ask these BJP leaders and ministers to take up cause of farmers and, if they fail, the farmers should boycott the BJP leaders. Opposing a law does not make us anti-national,” asserted Chaudhary.

Ramraspal Poniya, the district president of Rashtriya Lok Dal, said, “We had given the call for the mahapanchayat only last (Friday) night and thousands of farmers gathered on Saturday.

This shows that farmers are united and would oppose farm laws till the end.”
