KANPUR: Every day, without fail, for 28 years 80-year-old Krishna Dixit of Yashoda Nagar, Kanpur had set aside Rs 5 for the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Krishna managed to save the Rs 5 per day from the money meant to run her household.

Recently, she handed over her savings – a little over Rs 51,000 -- to prantiya pracharak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Shri Ram as her contribution for the temple construction.

Together with the contribution of her family members, the total money given for the temple construction was Rs 1,30,900, which includes one month’s salary of her grandson Namit Dixit.

Namit had kept his first salary that he drew a year ago for donating for the temple construction. “My family was associated with the Ram temple movement since the beginning; I always, like millions of Indians, wished to see the Ram temple at the birth place of Lord Ram,” Krishna said.

It was in 1992 that she began saving Rs 5 per day for the temple construction. “I continued saving five rupees a day till date. I am happy I did my bit,” she said.

“There are so many mothers who are devoted completely to nation building and playing the role of Jijabai,” said Shri Ram.

RSS leaders with that of the VHP are going door-to-door these days to raise funds for the temple construction and are accepting as little as Rs 10 from people.

Since not more than Rs 20,000 can be accepted in cash, Krishna gave the money to her another son Gaurang, who deposited it in his account and gave a cheque to the RSS leader, said Omendra Awasthi of VHP.
