UP BUDGET SESSION TODAY: YOGI FOR MEANINGFUL DEBATE

Governor’s address before the joint sitting of the two Houses will mark the start of the session

LUCKNOW : The state legislatur­e’s budget session will begin here on Thursday with chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday saying the state government would like to have a meaningful debate on important issues even while the major Opposition parties looked to be getting ready to raise matters like the farmers’ agitation, rising prices of petroleum products and the law and order situation. Governor Anandiben Patel’s will address the joint sitting of the two houses at 11am.

LUCKNOW: The state legislatur­e’s budget session will begin here on Thursday with chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday saying the state government would like to have a meaningful debate on important issues even while the major Opposition parties looked to be getting ready to raise matters like the farmers’ agitation, rising prices of petroleum products and the law and order situation.

Governor Anandiben Patel’s address before the joint sitting of the two Houses at 11am on Thursday will mark the beginning of the session.

Assembly speaker Hriday Narayan Dikshit convened an all-party here meeting on Wednesday to seek the cooperatio­n of the leaders of all political parties. After attending the meeting, leader of Opposition Ram Govind Chaudhary (Samajwadi Party), said, “Yes, we will raise the issues concerning the farmers’ agitation, unemployme­nt, rising inflation and increase in prices of petroleum products and law and order situation. We are demanding more sittings to allow debate on various important issues and the Opposition has perfect floor coordinati­on.” The Opposition groups are also holding meetings of their legislatur­e parties to work out their respective strategies.

The chief minister said the state government would present a paperless budget for 20212022 in the House and be keen for a smooth conduct of the proceeding­s. He said the members would be meeting nearly after six months. He referred to the state government’s successful strategy of checking the spread of Covid-19 and said the state government would like to have a meaningful debate on important issues in the House.

Besides the chief minister, minister for parliament­ary affairs and finance Suresh Khanna, Apna Dal leader Neel Ratan Singh Patel, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Lalji Verma and Congress Legislatur­e Party leader Aradhana Mishra ‘Mona’ attended the meeting.

Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party’s Triveni Ram attended the meeting in place of SBSP leader Om Prakash Rajbhar.

Verma said the speaker sought the cooperatio­n of leaders of all the political parties and the Opposition had assured cooperatio­n for smooth conduct of the business of the House.

“We have requested the state government to have a longer budget session to have more time for debate on important issues. The Congress will also raise the issues concerning the agitation of farmers, law and order issues, mainly the rising crime against women, inflation and various other issues of public importance,” said Mishra.

The speaker also presided over a meeting of the business advisory committee of the House. The state government proposes to present the state budget for 2021-2022 on February 22 and get the same passed on March 10. The state assembly has allowed the members to attend the House proceeding­s virtually. As social distancing will be followed for the seating of members, arrangemen­ts for them have been made in galleries too.
