PRAYAGRAJ: The body of a young woman, who along her male partner had allegedly consumed poison outside the Allahabad high court on Wednesday and later died, was handed over to her family after the post-mortem examination here on Thursday, said SRN police outpost incharge sub-inspector Dayaram.

The woman, who her father claimed before the police, was 20 years old, and the man, 28, both from Hardoi district, belonged to different religions, the police said. Earlier, her partner had informed the police that she was 17. The man was out of danger, they added.

The police said the couple left their home in Hardoi a week ago to get married. The woman’s family claimed to have filed abduction charges against the man at Arwal police station in Hardoi, the police added.

Kotwali station house officer Vinod Kumar on Wednesday said the inter-faith couple reached the high court premises to apply for court marriage but were told by someone that their union couldn’t be solemnised. Upset, they consumed poison and were taken to SRN Hospital where the woman died during the treatment in the night.

On Thursday, the woman’s partner, alleged that her partner’s parents had married her off a year back despite her being a minor. As per him, she later returned to her parent’s home and came in his contact.

“We decided to marry but her parents were opposing our relations. We had come to Allahabad high court for marriage but consumed poison when we failed to get the marriage solemnised,” he claimed.

SRN police outpost in-charge Dayaram said two cops are posted outside the man’s ward. “The man will be handed over to Hardoi police once he recovers as there is an FIR registered against him by the kin of the deceased in Hardoi,” he added.
