NEW DELHI/LUCKNOW: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday hit out at the Uttar Pradesh government over the issue of women safety, after two teenage girls were found dead in a field in Unnao.

Rahul Gandhi alleged that the UP government was not only suppressin­g the Dalit society but also crushing the honour and human rights of women in the state. He also used the hashtag “Save_Unnao_Ki_Beti” with his tweet.

Priyanka demanded that the third girl be shifted to Delhi for better medical treatment.

In a Facebook post in Hindi, Priyanka said, “The Unnao incident is heart-wrenching. Hearing out the family and providing immediate medical help to the third victim is very important for investigat­ion and justice.”

She also cited news reports and said the victims’ family members have been detained.

Mayawati for high-level probe

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) national president, Mayawati on Thursday demanded high level inquiry into the Unnao case. The culprits should be given strict punishment, she said.

In a tweet Mayawati said, two Dalit girls died under mysterious condition while the condition of the third girl is stated to be critical. The death of the girls is a serious and sad incident. Expressing grief over the deaths, she demanded high level inquiry and strict action against the culprits.

SP delegation to visit Unnao

A delegation of Samajwadi Party (SP) will visit Unnao to probe the incident, said party spokespers­on Rajendra Chaudhary on Thursday in a statement.

He said the party formed the delegation as asked by the national president Akhilesh Yadav. The six-member delegation includes former MPs Anu Tandon and Usha Verma, Unnao MLC Sunil Singh Saajan and a few others.

The delegation would probe the incident and meet the family members of the victims.
