MEERUT: Farmers staged dharna at railway tracks in different districts of the region following the ‘ Rail Roko’ call by the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha( SKM).

Farmers sat on railways tracks for four hours between 12 noon to 4 pm but they claimed that no train passed through the tracks during their protest.

BKU’s divisional spokesperson Dinesh Choudhary said that farmers blocked railway tracks between Delhi and Lucknow at Garhmukteshwar in Hapur district. “We sat on dharna for over three hours but no train passed on this busy route. It seems that trains were stopped at different stations in the wake of the farmers’ protest”, said Choudhary and added that they utilized the time to brief farmers about flaws in the farm laws.

Chaudhary Brijpal Singh, Thambedar ( local chief) of Deshkhap, also made similar claims that farmers blocked railways tracks in Baghpat for four hours but no train passed from there. He said, “Our protest was peaceful but the government seems to have got scared and stopped trains from plying on some routes”. In Muzaffarnagar, farmers staged dharna at railway tracks under BKU’s district president Dheeraj Latiyan for over four hours. Latiyan said that no train arrived during the protest which they continued as per the directions of the SKM.

Reports of blocking railway track also came from Shamli, Saharanpur, Meerut, Ghaziabad and other districts. Senior officials also visited the protesting farmers and tried to convince them to end their protest but the latter refused and continued their protest. At Garh station of district Hapur, police tried to stop farmers from staging dharna at railway track but farmers blocked the track for hours. Later, SP of Hapur Neeraj Jadaun, DM Anuj Singh distributed roses to farmers.
