PRAYGARAJ: Back-to-back twin visit of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has boosted the morale of party carde in Prayagraj. They believe that Priyanka’s focus on this old Congress stronghold would prove to be beneficial during forthcoming polls.

Besides being the native place of Nehru-Gandhi family, Allahabad (now Prayagraj) has been a Congress bastion in the past but during past some decades, the party has lost its ground. Moreover, senior congress leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi hailing from the city left the party and joined BJP.

City president of Congress Nafees Anwar said visits of Priyanka Gandhi twice within ten days have filled the local Congress leaders and workers with enthusiasm. Her visits have also increased the confidence of people of Prayagraj in Congress party.

“Priyanka’s visits indicate that Prayagraj will become the base of party’s political campaigning across the state. Prayagraj is the native place of Gandhi family and has been its bastion for decades. Priyanka has increased the confidence level of Congress leaders and workers in Prayagraj and in the forthcoming polls party will perform better than previous polls” Nafees Anwar said.

Priyanka Gandhi arrived at Sangam to take holy dip on Mauni Amavasya on February 11. On Sunday, she again visited Prayagraj and met the members of boatmen and fishermen community at baswar village who were allegedly assaulted by police during a crackdown against illegal mining.

Congress leader Shreesh Chandra Dubey said people of Prayagraj are emotionally attached to Gandhi family. Priyanka’s visits will increase confidence of people in Congress which has made many sacrifices for the country, Dubey added.

City Congress general secretary Sushmita Yadav said Priyanka Gandhi has influenced women in Prayagaraj. Women at Baswar freely interacted with Priyanka and shared their woes. Her visits to Prayagraj will definitely make the people feel connected to the party once again and will give good results in the upcoming elections, she further said.

Congress trans-Yamuna in-charge Arun Tiwari said Priyanka’s visit to Baswar had given new energy to the party men working on ground level.

“People in rural areas are worst hit in the present regime and are looking forward for a change. There is a large population of farmers and other communities who depend on rivers for their living in Prayagraj who are seeing hope in Congress,” he said.
