PRAYAGRAJ : In a major breakthrough, joint teams of Khuldabad police and cybercrime cell cracked an online fraud committed through social media platforms.

The joint team nabbed a person from the Deoghar district of Jharkhand who had duped many persons while offering them special food ‘thali’ for only Rs 10 in the name of popular Sagar Ratna Restaurant.

One of the victims had lodged an FIR at Khuldabad police station a few days back.

SHO of Khuldabad police station Inspector Virendra Kumar Yadav said on June 17, 2020, one Rajiv Bajaj saw an offer on Facebook by Sagar Ratna Restaurant in which special ‘thali’ (food plate) was offered for only Rs 10. Bajaj called on the mobile number mentioned in the advertisement.

The person who received the call sent Bajaj a link on his mobile and asked him to deposit cash Rs 10 to connect his mobile with the company’s app. The food will be delivered by the restaurant soon after, he had promised. However, Rs 20,000 were deducted from Bajaj’s bank account in two transactions as soon as he transferred Rs 10.

Rajiv Bajaj approached Khuldabad police and lodged an FIR in this connection.

During investigations by Khuldabad police and cybercrime cell, it came to fore that two mobile apps were used for duping the complainant. The cash was then transferred to the bank account of one Vidyanand Chaudhary of Deoghar district of Jharkhand.

The police team reached Deoghar and arrested Vidyanand’s father Murari Chaudhary who was brought to Prayagraj on transit remand.

SHO further informed that Murari hails from the Giridih district and lives with his kin at Bhandaridih village in Deoghar. The whole family was involved in online frauds. Murari has posted an advertisement on Facebook on the pretext of Sagar Ratna Restaurant to lure and dupe people.

He transferred the cash to the bank account of his son Vidyanand. Many persons in his village and Jharkhand were involved in the cybercrimes and were expert in using mobile apps and Hi-Tech software. Murari is being questioned further to know about other persons he has duped similarly, SHO Yadav added.
