20,000 fingerling­s of Indian major carp released in Ganga

PRAYAGRAJ: Indian Council of Agricultur­al Research-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Prayagraj released 20,000 fingerling seeds of Indian Major Carp (IMC) in the Ganga at Narvar Chaukatha village of Manda developmen­t block of Prayagraj, under Namami Gange programme on Saturday. The exercise was aimed at restoring and conserving the depleting fish species of the Ganga, ICAR-CIFRI, Prayagraj officials said.

Absar Alam, scientist, CIFRI welcomed the guests and briefed about the ranching programme. DN Jha, scientist in-charge of the centre explained the importance of ranching in detail to the audience and suggested fishermen community not to catch the brooder (mature individual necessary breeding purposes) of Indian Major Carp during breeding period. He also informed the gathering about the work done by ICAR-CIFRI to conserve and restore important fishes of the Ganga. Manvendra Singh, a former official, FCI was the chief guest on the occasion. He briefly described the importance of the Ganga for the existence of civilizati­on with an emphasis to involve all stakeholde­rs to save the Ganga. The special guest on the occasion was Rajesh

He sensitized the people on how to keep Ganga pollution free and role of common masses for this. Officials from Ganga Vichar Manch, fishermen of nearby villages, fish traders and locals living on the banks of Ganga were also present.
