India’s finest Test wins

-

The Oval, 1971: India’s first Test win in England was hugely emotional. Leg-spinner Bhagwat Chandrasekar was the architect of the victory. His memorable spell of 6/38 routed England’s second innings for 101, setting up India’s four-wicket win.

Port-of-Spain, 1976: The Trinidad pitch was aiding spin — all 16 West Indies wickets fell to Indian spinners — but no one in their wildest dreams could have imagined India chasing down a world record fourth-innings total of 403. Sunil Gavaskar (102), Mohinder Amarnath (85) and GR Viswanath (112) steered India to 406/4.

Multan, 2004: Playing a Test series in Pakistan after 14 years, India crushed their main rivals by an innings in the first Test of the series under stand-in skipper Rahul Dravid. Virender Sehwag struck 309, the first Test triple by an Indian batsman, before Yuvraj Singh’s run out of Inzamam-ul-Haq hastened Pakistan’s defeat.

Perth, 2008: With the Sydney Test loss amid the Monkeygate scandal still fresh in their memory, few expected India to breach Australia’s fortress WACA. But Anil Kumble’s side clinched India’s first win at Perth.

Brisbane, 2021: India, depleted due to injury, simply refused to give up as they breached Fortress Gabba in the final Test in January 2021, clinching a memorable second straight series win in Australia. The hosts had gone 31 Tests unbeaten at the venue, winning 24 of those. Rishabh Pant’s sensational 89* saw India chase down 328, winning by three wickets.
