BHU signs MoU with ICS to facilitate cancer screening programme
VARANSAI: The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Indian Cancer Society (ICS) on Wednesday signed an MoU for conducting a cancer screening programme to facilitate early detection of the disease.
The MoU has been signed to facilitate “Ganga Godavari Cancer Screening Programme” by AstraZeneca India (a pharmaceutical company) that intends to create awareness and detection of oral, breast and cervical cancers among women at an early stage at specialized cancer screening camps. Doctors For You, a pan India humanitarian organization, is the implementing partner for this programme in Varanasi.
“In alignment with the vision of Ayushman Bharat Scheme of Government of India, AstraZeneca in association with BHU, and Indian Cancer Society is committed to facilitate early cancer screening in women,” said Dr Anita Yadav, representative of AstraZeneca.
The current phase of this program, which started on Wednesday, will be implemented in Varanasi in consensus with National Health Mission (NHM) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
The department of community medicine at IMS-BHU will act as a nodal agency for this program.
The department of obstetrics and gynaecology, general surgery and dentistry would provide an expert team of medical professionals for provision of screening services at the health and wellness centre at Tikri, Dr Yadav said.
ICS would act as executing agency and would supervise and ensure effective implementation of this programme at the ground level, she said.
Dr Sangeeta Kansal, IMSBHU, department of community medicine, said that it was a matter of great joy to partner with Indian Cancer Society in alignment with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) to support the specialized cancerscreening for women from underprivileged families in Uttar Pradesh.
Col Abdul Khadar, deputy director general, Indian Cancer Society, said, “Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality among adults in India. Programs like the Ganga Godavari cancer screening programme that are driven across the country will go a long way in supporting India’s fight against cancer.”
