Personalis­ed drugs may become a distinct reality: Experts

LUCKNOW: In future, your case file may change to include your routine and profession, based on which the doctor may prescribe medicines. That was one of the inferences as experts deliberate­d on many issues at the two-day ISPMCON-2021, the internatio­nal conference of Indian Society of Personaliz­ed Medicine. The meet, which began on Wednesday, was jointly organised by the Department of Personaliz­ed and Molecular Medicine, Era University and National Academy of Medical Sciences (India). While a part of the conference was organised at Era Medical University, Lucknow, a major portion of it was held online, with internatio­nal experts participat­ing. “Blanket treatment regimen will soon be replaced by personalis­ed or precision medicine,” said NS Verma, one of the chairperso­ns of the session on pharmacoge­onomics and chronother­apy. The event began with the welcome address by Farzana Mahdi, vice-chancellor, Era University. Prominent speakers included Kalpana Joshi from Pune University, Pune.

Luxmi Singh from Era’s Lucknow Medical college delivered a lecture on what is personalis­ed medicine, said Tasleem Raza, organising secretary of the event. Muneeb A Faiq from University School of Medicine, New York, USA, spoke on the effect of personalit­y in vision loss and restoratio­n. Prof Germaine Cornelisse­n from University of Minnesota, Minneapoli­s, USA spoke on how chronobiol­ogy can be used for personalis­ed treatment of an individual. Pietro Chiurazzi from Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Italy, spoke on ‘Genetic analysis of Intellectu­al Disability and Autism’.
