Work on world’s longest LPG pipeline begins in UP

1,111km of the Kandla-Gorakhpur pipeline will pass through 18 districts of the state

VARANASI: Work on the Uttar Pradesh leg of the ambitious 2,757-kilometre-long LPG pipeline, stretching from Kandla port in Gujarat to Gorakhpur, began a week back in Varanasi and Unnao. Administra­tive officials performed a groundbrea­king ceremony in Hathiwar village of Pindara area of Varanasi. In the Varanasi district, 43 kilometres of the pipeline will pass through.

The length of the LPG pipeline in UP will be around 1,111 km, transporti­ng LPG from Kandla to Gorakhpur. This will be the world’s longest LPG pipeline and is expected to meet about 25% of India’s total LPG demand.

It will benefit around 34 crore people by cutting down on transporta­tion costs as well as time taken in transporta­tion.

The pipeline will enter Uttar Pradesh near Manikchok village of Lalitpur district, traverse through Lalitpur, Jhansi, Jalaun, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur Nagar, Unnao, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh, Prayagraj, Bhadohi, Jaunpur, Varanasi, Gajipur, Azamgarh, Mau, Deoria and Gorakhpur districts. Here it will finally terminate at LPG terminals of companies.

Ranvijay Singh, additional district magistrate, administra­tion, said, “The Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG pipeline is an ambitious project of the government of India. The pipeline will benefit consumers and will also help environmen­tal conservati­on while also generating direct and indirect employment opportunit­ies.”

IHB Private Limited is a joint venture company of three leading oil and gas central public sector undertakin­gs – Indian Oil Corporatio­n Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporatio­n Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporatio­n Limited – which will implement the KandlaGora­khpur LPG pipeline project, and thereafter, operate and manage it, officials associated with IHB said.

After beginning in Kandla of Kutch district, the pipeline will traverse Kutch, Morbi, Surendrana­gar, Ghandinaga­r, Bharuch, Mehsana, Kheda, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodra, Panchmahal, Dahod and Botad districts of Gujarat. The pipeline will enter Madhya Pradesh near Kalakhunt and will pass through the districts of Jhabua, Dhar, Indore, Dewas, Sehore, Sajapur and Bhopal, added the officer.

He added that the pipeline will facilitate transport of LPG from import terminals at

Kandla, Dahej and Pipavav and also the two refineries at Koyali and Bina to 22 LPG bottling plants directly (three in Gujarat, six in Madhya Pradesh and 13 in Uttar Pradesh) and 21 bottling plants indirectly in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Gaurav Singh, senior project manager, IHB, Lucknow said, “The pipeline will be constructe­d in line with standards of Petroleum Natural Regulatory Gas Board, Oil Industry Safety Directorat­e, and American Petroleum Institute guidelines.”

The deadline of the project is December 2021.

Transporta­tion of crude oil and petroleum products through the pipeline is the safest mode of transport in comparison to other modes of transporta­tion that is rail and roads, the official said.
