FIVE POLICEMEN INJURED IN ATTACK BY VILLAGERS

PRAYAGRAJ: At least five policemen were injured after villagers threw stones at them in Makhdumpur village under Nawabganj police station of trans-Ganga area of the district on Thursday. The villagers had entered into an argument with the district revenue team and the police when they reached the village following a fire in the wheat crop fields.

The injured policemen were taken to hospital for treatment and further action will soon be taken in connection with the incident, police said.

According to reports, wheat fields at Makhdumpur village caught fire on Thursday afternoon.

Villagers called police and fire department and then themselves tried to douse fire. Fire tenders reached the spot but by that time the fire had spread to many fields causing much loss to wheat crops. Alleging that fire tenders did not reach on time, villagers entered into an argument with police and senior officials.

Some of them turned violent and overturned a police vehicle. Policemen tried to control the situation, but the villagers pelted them with stones forcing the cops to flee. Additional force soon reached the spot and chased away the miscreants.

SP (trans-Ganga) Dhawal Jaiswal also reached the spot and pacified the enraged villagers. The fire was completely doused after an exercise of several hours.

SP (trans-Ganga) Dhawal Jaiswal said fire tenders and policemen were dousing the fire at the fields in Makhdumpur village. In the meanwhile, some villagers had a scuffle with revenue department team which has arrived at the spot.

Policemen tried to intervene but some miscreants among the villagers pelted stones on them resulting in injuries to five cops.

The injured policemen were rushed to hospital for treatment and miscreants were chased away. Further action will soon be taken in this connection, he added.
