PRAYAGRAJ : In a bid to ensure free and fair panchayat polls in the district, Prayagraj police are distributing confidence letters and pasting posters urging rural voters to contact police if they are threatened by anyone or any attempt is made to lure them with liquor or cash to favour a particular candidate.

Police officials are holding meetings in remote rural areas and are approaching marginalised sections who are often subjected to harassment and threat at the hands of local musclemen. To enhance their faith in law, cops are giving them confidence letters containing mobile numbers of police and administrative officials.

“The objective is to ensure fair and free panchayat polls. The letter is being handed over to people to spread the message that no one will be allowed to threaten or lure voters in their favour. The initiative will certainly help in ensuring that rural people can cast their votes without any pressure,” SP transGanga Dhawal Jaiswal said.

He also said the police were carrying out regular patrolling in villages and were in touch with rural people. “Every information given by villagers is taken seriously and action is ensured against miscreants. Strict eye is being kept on those panchayat polls aspirants with past record of threatening or luring voters,” he added. Ahead of the panchayat polls, Prayagraj police has launched massive crackdown against illicit liquor suppliers, firearm smugglers, wanted criminals and history sheeters to ensure peaceful polls.
