This cop goes extra mile to help patients, their kin

PRAYAGRAJ: Overcoming his own fear in this hour of need, a policeman here is going the extra mile to help patients, both Covid and non-Covid, so that they get treatment in time.

Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) hospital police outpost incharge sub-inspector Dayaram (he goes by one name) can be seen requesting doctors and other medical staff to attend patients urgently if their condition is deteriorat­ing. Otherwise, his duties include maintainin­g security at SRN hospital and keeping record of bodies sent for autopsy there. Dayaram, in his 40s, is posted at SRN outpost for over a year now and is known to nearly all doctors and medical staff. At a time when Covid cases have risen, he makes sure that positive patients are attended by doctors. Other constables at the outpost have also started emulating Dayaram. Moreover, Dayaram also pacifies the attendants of patients many of whom often gets enraged alleging negligence and lack of facilities at the hospital. “Pacifying attendants and helping patients has become part of my duty these days. Other policemen and I do whatever we can to help patients and attendants especially those who are poor. We also take care of kin of policemen who are admitted here and encourage them for speedy recovery while taking all precaution­s to remain safe from Covid infection,” he said.

He also receives regular calls from officials and other policemen urging him to help their relatives admitted to the hospital in case of any need. The cops also have to keep watch on ambulance drivers taking bodies of Covid victims to ghat for cremation after complaints of overchargi­ng by them. SRN hospital has presently L2 and L3 wards for Covid patients where many policemen, their kin and relatives of many officials are also admitted.
