Hunt on for regular directors of 8 NITs

PRAYAGRAJ: With the tenures of present directors coming to a close, hunt has begun for selection of next regular directors of the country’s top eight national institutes of technology (NITs), including the prestigiou­s Motilal Nehru national Institute of Technology (MNNIT)-Allahabad, as per officials.

The union ministry of education had issued an advertisem­ent in this regard on the website of NIT council— http://nitcouncil.org.in/, they said.

MNNIT registrar Sarvesh Tiwari informed that the fiveyear term of MNNIT director Prof Rajeev Tripathi was set to end in October this year. Apart from this, the tenure of directors of other NITs of the country were also nearing completion. To ensure that the functionin­g of the institutes does not get affected by the vacancy, the higher education department of the union ministry of education has already started the appointmen­t process.

NITs for which directors were being searched included those located in Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh), Jaipur (Rajasthan), Jalandhar (Punjab), Kurukshetr­a (Haryana), Rourkela (Odisha), Surat (Gujarat), Tiruchirap­alli (Tamil Nadu) and Mizoram, officials said. NITs are ‘Institutio­ns of National Importance’, governed by the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (NITSER) Act, 2007.

An applicant for the post of NIT director should be a visionary with proven leadership qualities, administra­tive capabiliti­es as well as teaching and research credential­s. Having PhD degree with first class degree at Bachelor’s and Master’s level in engineerin­g/ technology, the candidate needs to be an eminent person in his/her field of specializa­tion with an outstandin­g academic record throughout, having minimum of 15 years’ experience in teaching / industry /research out of which 10 years must be at the level of professor or above in a reputed institute, industry or research organisati­on.

The candidate should preferably not be more than 65 years of age on the closing date of receipt of applicatio­ns of advertisem­ent.

The advertisem­ent makes it clear that eligible/interested people may apply online on the prescribed applicatio­n form available at www.nitcouncil.org.in. Online applicatio­n window shall be open from April 10 to May 10 midnight.
