PRAYAGRAJ: n anticipation of the third wave of the pandemic and going by the advice of experts, Sangam city is witnessing extensive preparations to meet the challenge.

The count of beds in government hospitals is being increased, the capacity of present oxygen plants is also being enhanced, a new mega plant is being set up, changes are being made in hospitals to lessen admission time of patients—all part of steps being taken, both on government and individual levels to be prepared for the future.

Increasing number of beds

In preparation to meet the third wave of pandemic, the count of beds in different government and private hospitals of the district is being increased. There are plans to increase 200 beds in the Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital and the same number in the Medicity hospital and the medical college too. Similar preparations are underway in private hospitals as well.

Smaller hospitals in rural areas are also being prepared for treatment of Covid-19-positive patients. Divisional commissioner Sanjay Goyal and district magistrate Bhanu Chandra Goswami are meeting health department officials to oversee the increase of beds and other facilities in hospitals. “We are enhancing our facilities and infrastructure in view of the expected third wave of the pandemic,” said Mangal Singh, principal, Medicity hospital.

SRN changes admission process

People with Covid-19, will no longer have to wander from one place to another at SRNH. They will have to go directly to the entrance of the old building. Doctors will check them and send them directly to the ICU or to the oxygen bed, whichever is needed. This single point admission system has been implemented to reduce the problem of patients by the principal, SP Singh,” said Saurabh Dubey, PRO, SRNH. Devendra Shukla has been made in-charge of this process, he added.

Enhancing oxygen capacity

Oxygen production in the district is also being increased. Medicity hospital is setting up an oxygen plant and procuring oxygen concentrators. The present production capacity of Parerhat Chemicals Private Limited (an oxygen producing firm), located in Naini, is also being enhanced by another 1,000 cylinders per day. There is also a plan for setting up an oxygen plant of 20,000-litre capacity at SRN Hospital. Umesh Jaiswal, owner of Prabha Constructions has started putting up his mega plant at Naini (with a capacity of 1,100 oxygen cylinders per day). The plant is all set to start production by August end. BPCL in Naini will also start producing oxygen cylinders from this month. There are plans to make 2,500 in the first phase.

Medicines and equipment

Drug and general traders are

serious about the third wave of corona. After facing shortage in the second wave, drug dealers have started procuring oxygen concentrators, regulators, BP machines, oxygen measuring instruments, etc.

Prominent medicine dealers Lalu Mittal and Mohd Qadir said they are asking for all the equipment and medicines to be stocked so that patients do not face problems whenever the third wave hits.
