PRAYAGRAJ : Tauktae cyclone-induced heavy rain in the last three failed to deter people in the Sangam city from taking their Covid vaccine jabs. Braving the shower that lashed the city from May 18 to May 20, over 25,000 people of all target age groups reached various vaccination centres to get themselves vaccinated, say officials.

“The rain did not deter the people from getting vaccinated. We witnessed 9,364 people reaching vaccination centres and getting their jabs on May 18. They included 6,729 individuals in 18-44 age category,” said district immunisation officer Dr Tirath Lal.

“There was also heavy rain on Wednesday but we had 7,885 people reaching vaccination centres ,” he added. Dr Lal said even on Thursday (May 20), 8,153 people reached the vaccination centres to get inoculated despite bad weather.

“Between January 16, when vaccination drive started, and till May 21, over 4.89 lakh Prayagraj residents have got themselves vaccinated,” he said.

District Covid nodal officer Dr Rishi Sahai said as vaccination against coronavirus was progressing at a good rate in the district, Prayagraj had also seen count of daily cases coming down substantially.

“On May 21, we have 108 new Covid cases against 11,320 tests conducted in the district besides three deaths even as 263 people recovered from the infection. They included 36 patients who were discharged from hospitals and 227 others who completed their home isolation successfully,” he added. “As a result, on May 21 the district witnessed a positivity rate of below 1 per cent. The count of active patients too came down to 1,753 as on Friday evening,” Dr Sahai said.

Police sub inspector posted at George Town police station Awadh Kumar Gautam said the accused, identified as Rakesh Kumar, 48 arrived at the Covid-19 vaccination centre in an inebriated condition and demanded that he be administered the second dose of the vaccine.

He also entered into an altercation with the nodal officer as well as woman staff at the vaccination centre and abused them. The vaccination centre staff subsequently reported the matter to the police.

“On the complaint of the nodal officer of the vaccination centre, an FIR has been registered against the accused.
