‘78 black fungus patients under treatment at BHU’

A team of 18 doctors from various department­s of IMSBHU are treating black fungus patients.

VARANASI: Seventy-eight patients of Black Fungus are under treatment at Sir Sundar Lal (SSL) Hospital, IMS-BHU here, said Prof KK Gupta, medical superinten­dent of the hospital, on Sunday.

The first patient of Black Fungus was admitted to the hospital on April 24. “So far, 84 patients of Black Fungus have been admitted to the SSL hospital. At present, 78 patients are under treatment while six have died. Four black fungus deaths were reported in the last two days, two each on Saturday and Sunday while the rest two occurred two weeks ago. The black fungus patients, who died, were with comorbidit­ies,” said Gupta.

A team of 18 doctors from various department­s of IMS-BHU has been constitute­d for treating black fungus patients. The team includes ENT experts, neurologis­ts, physicians, ophthalmol­ogists, microbiolo­gists and dental surgeons, he said.

He said, “The specialist­s are providing proper treatment to the black fungus patients admitted here. A total of 78 patients are under treatment in postCovid and Covid wards here. Of them, 39 black fungus patients are Covid positive.”

Prof Gupta said the remaining 39 are admitted in the post Covid ward. These patients have recovered from Covid-19 and suffered black fungus thereafter. They are Covid-19 negative, he said.

According to him, the post Covid ward has 80 beds, including four beds with ventilator support. On Sunday, 40 more beds have been added to the ward, keeping in view rise in the number of black fungus cases. The beds have been made functional with immediate effect.
