LUCKNOW: The state government may need to tweak a bit the much publicised slogan“do gaz ki doori, mask hai jaruri” (maintain two yards’ distance and wear a mask) as it continues the campaign to educate the people about measures for protection against the second wave of Covid-19.

A ‘double mask’ and ‘vaccination’ have been added to measures/suggestion that the state government proposes to publicise through public address systems set up at public places that include premises of offices of divisional commissioners, district magistrates, tehsils and the land consolidation commissioners.

“Public address systems set up on premises of divisional commissioner’s offices, district magistrate’s offices, tehsils and land consolidation commissioner’s offices be consistently used to publicise measures/ suggestions like “do daz ki doori banaye rakhna, samay samay par haath dhulna, sanitise karna, double mask lagana evam vaccination karaye jaana” (maintaining two yard distance, washing hands from time to time, sanitization and putting up double mask and vaccination) for protection against second wave of Covid-19,” said additional chief secretary revenue Renuka Kumar in an order dated June 2, 2021 sent to all the divisional commissioners, district magistrates and land consolidation commissioners.

When contacted, Kumar said her order was only a reiteration of the advisory issued earlier. “We have been using the public address system to educate people. The use of double mask has been advised as per the protocol,” she said.

The state government, as part of measures undertaken to fight Covid-19 (first wave), had asked officials to set up public address systems at public places, including office premises, to educate people about measures for protection against coronavirus. These measures included maintaining two yards’ distance, washing of hands, sanitization and wearing a mask (not a double mask).

A reference about the orders issued in 2020 too has been made in the June 2 order, saying, “Directives had been given last year to set up public address systems to publicise measures/suggestions to educate people about protection against Covid-19- “do gaz ki doori banaye rakhna, samay samay par haath dhulna, sanatise karna evam mask lagana” (maintaining two yard distance, washing hands from time to time, sanitization and wearing a mask) at various public places in districts,” said Kumar, while pointing towards the GO number-785/ek-11-2020 dated September 28, 2020.” It pointed out that directives were also given to buy the public address systems by deciding rates per unit and minimum specifications vide government order number-798/ek-11-2020 dated October 13, 2020. It said keeping in view the second wave of Covid-19, publicity of measures/suggestions for protection and safety of people through the public address system was expected.

“The Union government has incorporated use of double mask in the protocol during the second wave of Covid-19. It’s important to wear a double mask in crowded areas. A mask provides about 97 per cent protection even if two people are wearing their masks. However, a person wearing a double mask is fully protected (100 per cent),” said Dr Surya Kant, professor and head, respiratory medicine department, King George’s Medical University, Lucknow.
