Cops attacked by devotees going to shrine, three injured

PRAYAGRAJ: Three policemen, including a woman cop, were injured when a crowd of people attacked them at Sikandara village under Baharia police station of trans-Ganga area on Sunday.

The injured policemen were rescued and were given medical treatment. An FIR was being lodged in this connection and some persons have been taken into custody, police said.

The incident occurred when the policemen on duty tried to stop a group of devotees from Gopalpur village of

Sarai Mamrez from offering ‘nishan’ at the ‘mazar’ of Gazi Miya due to the weekend closure.

The policemen informed them that the ‘mazar’ of Gazi Miya was closed for devotees as weekend corona curfew was in effect. The cops asked the crowd to return and follow Covid guidelines.

However, some persons entered into an argument with policemen which soon turned into a clash. It is alleged that some persons in the crowd armed with sticks assaulted the policemen.

According to police, a woman constable, Suman Yadav, received head injury in stone pelting while two other constables Chandravee­r and Nandlal got bruises in their legs.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot on receiving informatio­n and controlled the situation.

SP trans-Ganga Dhawal Jaiswal said, “Only a woman constable Suman Yadav received head injuries while the two other cops got bruises in their legs and were discharged after primary treatment. An FIR was being lodged in this connection. Two persons Chandrashe­khar and Abhijeet Kumar have been detained for questionin­g.”
