PRAYAGRAJ : Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Monday slammed Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati for her tweet regarding the arrest of two Al-Qaeda linked terrorists in the state capital.

“Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav should not play the politics of appeasement over the issue of terrorism and national security,” said the deputy CM. He was speaking to media persons in Sangam city after the swearing-in ceremony of the zila panchayat president VK Singh and recently elected members of different panchayats.

“Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav should not look at the arrest of terrorists through electoral glasses,” Maurya said.

Earlier, BSP chief Mayawati on Monday had tweeted, “This type of action only when the UP assembly elections are approaching creates doubts in the minds of the people. If there is any truth behind this action, then why were the police oblivious (to such activities) for so long?” This is the question being asked by the people. Therefore, the government should not take any action which increases unrest among the people.”

Even former CM of the state and Samajwadi Party’s president, Akhilesh Yadav had on Sunday commented, “I can’t trust the actions of the UP police and CM Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in the state.”

In the swearing-in ceremony of zila panchayat president, the deputy CM said that the state government was working in the direction of electing the zila panchayat presidents and block pramukhs by the people from the next elections. “The use of money and muscle power makes the situation very bad. Therefore, work is being done to get these leaders directly elected by the people,” Maurya said.

Speaking on the proposed new population policy of the Yogi government, Maurya said that population explosion was a serious problem and termed the opposition’s protest as ‘incorrect’. Maurya said that the government had started efforts to control the population. He brushed aside the opposition’s criticisms about it and said that the opposition should not link the same to elections.

The deputy CM said that the people of the state had elected the BJP government and hence, the government had full rights to take decisions till the last day of its tenure. Maurya said, “The elections will come and go, but the basic mantra is development which should not stop and there should be all-round development.”
