PRAYAGRAJ : After years of wait, finally there is hope of promotion for 794 assistant teachers working in government-run secondary schools across the state as lecturers.

As per state education department officials, the meeting of departmental promotion committee (DPC) for promotion of teachers of 10 subjects is scheduled to be held at Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) headquarters in Prayagraj on July 29.

Assistant teachers are eligible to teach students of class 6 to class 10 while lecturers teach students of class 11 and class 12. The importance of the DPC meeting can be gauged from the fact the promotion of assistant teachers (lecturers) has not taken place for the past 12 years, officials claim. In the July 29 meeting, assistant teachers appointed till 2000 would be considered for promotion, they add.

UPPSC joint secretary Om Prakash Mishra has asked officials of UP Education Directorate to come to UPPSC headquarters with the seniority list and list of eligibility of the teachers on July 22. As per the officials, there are a total of 1,869 vacant posts available for promotion in 18 subjects but of the eligible teachers, only 794 have been found to be fit for promotion with documents complete in all respects. For the remaining 1075 posts for which eligible candidates’ documents had objections, a missive was sent to the additional director concerned of the education department so that the objections could be redressed and these teachers could also get promotion against the existing vacant posts, the officials said.

The 10 subjects in which these teachers are to be promoted include mathematics, psychology, education, English, Sanskrit, agriculture, history, political science and logic. State general secretary, Rajkiya Shikshak Sangh (Pandey faction), Rameshwar Pandey, who had also met education directorate and UPPSC officials over the long pending promotions of assistant teachers, welcomed the move.

“Though these promotions would not make much of a financial difference to most senior teachers as they have already attained the higher pay grades on the basis of their years of service, they would be a morale booster and honour for the teachers, many of whom are on the verge of retirement,” said Pandey.

He said the teachers wanted the DPC for their promotions to be held at regular intervals and his association would want officials and leaders to ensure this in coming times.

These promotions will not make much financial difference to most senior teachers as they already get higher pay grades, but it will be an honour for the teachers many of whom are on the verge of retirement RAMESHWAR PANDEY, State general secretary, Rajkiya Shikshak Sangh (Pandey faction)
