IMD issues fresh warning of heavy rain in Delhi, Himachal

NEW DELHI: The India Meteorolog­ical Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning of heavy rainfall in Delhi on Sunday, even as it issued an orange alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts of Himachal Pradesh over the next six to seven days, news agency PTI reported.

In the national Capital, which witnessed a clear morning with the minimum temperatur­e settling at 28.2 degrees Celsius, the IMD said: “The minimum temperatur­e recorded at the Safdarjung Observator­y, considered the official reading of the city, was 28.2 degrees Celsius, and the relative humidity at 8.30 am was recorded at 75%.”

The weather man has predicted partly cloudy sky with light rain or thundersho­wers later in the day, while the maximum temperatur­e is expected to hover around 37 degrees Celsius. The city had received the first rain of the monsoon season on Tuesday, 16 days after the usual date of June 27.

Meanwhile, the Himachal Pradesh Met office has already issued a yellow warning to the state for heavy rainfall, thundersto­rm, and lightning in the plains, low hills and middle hills on Saturday. An orange warning has been issued for July 18 to 20, the PTI report added.

Various pockets of the state received light to moderate rainfall on Friday, with Sarkaghat gauging 86mn of rainfall, followed by 52mn in Nadaun, the met office stated. The IMD alerts come at a time when the death toll due to rain-triggered flash floods in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district went up to nine, even as several remain missing.

Apart from Himachal Pradesh, IMD has predicted heavy rainfall over several other states and Union territorie­s (UTs). These include Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhan­d, Rajasthan and Delhi among others.
