Free Wi-Fi facility at 217 places in Uttar Pradesh from Aug 15

LUCKNOW: People in the state would be able to avail of free Wi-Fi facility at 217 public places across all the 75 districts, municipal councils and 17 municipal corporatio­ns of the state from August 15, the 75th Independen­ce Day, onwards.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the officials of the urban developmen­t department to make the necessary preparatio­ns in this regard, according to a press release issued by the state government on Saturday.

The divisional commission­ers, district magistrate­s and municipal commission­ers have been told to identify hotspots at major public places, including all city bus stands, railway stations, tehsils, courts, block offices, registrar offices and main markets to provide the free Wi-Fi facility, the release added.

Soon after assuming power in the state, the Yogi Adityanath government provided free Wi-Fi hotspots in the Hazratganj area of Lucknow to enable people within a range of 50 metres to avail the facility free of cost.

Now, free Wi-Fi facility would be provided at all major public places in every district headquarte­rs, municipal councils and 17 municipal corporatio­ns. All in all, this Wi-Fi facility would be provided at 217 major public places across the state, the release quoting officials of the urban developmen­t department said.

Free Wi-Fi will be available at two places in big cities (municipal corporatio­ns) and at one place in small towns, officials said, according to the release.

The urban developmen­t department will tie up with internet companies to provide this facility and special attention will be given to internet speed, the release said. Municipal commission­ers and executive officers have been told that the Smart City Project, or urban bodies, will bear the cost of the Wi-Fi installati­on.

The urban bodies have also been asked to regularly provide informatio­n about the status of installati­ons.

Furthermor­e, the internet companies that are engaged in the installati­on of Wi-Fi networks will also have to look after the maintenanc­e to ensure that it works properly.

The speed of the Wi-Fi will be decided by the local authoritie­s.
