PRAYAGRAJ: : Only a few police stations in Prayagraj are under the command of sub inspectors (SIs) of police at the moment, most of them headed by inspector ranked officers.

However, a government order (GO) stating that SIs can be given charge of 50 per cent police stations in a district has provided hope to many, especially those who have been recognized for doing good work.

“We are hopeful now of getting bigger responsibilities,” an SI said.

So far, SIs were made station house officers (SHOs) at only six of the 41 police stations (after the recent addition of Phaphamau and Puramufti police stations) in Prayagraj district. “That was because of a previous order but now situation will hopefully change,” a SI said.

“So far according to an old order, barring Ghoorpur, Shankargarh, Kaundhiara, Lalapur, Khiri and Utraon police stations where SIs were posted as SHOs, all other police stations of the city were headed by inspector

rank officers. At Kareli police station a SI was made SHO but he too has now completed his training for inspector,” an official said.

SSP Sarvshrestha Tripathi meanwhile said sub inspectors can be handed over command of police stations depending on their abilities and requirement. “Although the new order is there now, it does not bar posting of inspectors at police stations,” he added.

Still, the SIs are hopeful about getting bigger roles after the new order. Many of them have been doing good job and are known for their ability to trace criminals and crack criminal cases.
