DEHRADUN: The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Jal police and local police on Thursday resumed a search operation to trace three tourists, including two women, from Mumbai, who were washed away in the fast flow of swelled Ganga in Rishikesh on Wednesday. Till the filing of this report, the joint team failed to locate them.

Kamal Mohan Singh Bhandari, in charge of Muni-ki-Reti police station in Rishikesh, said as the flow in the Ganga was quite fast, the search team couldn’t trace them downstream. “The search operation which resumed on Thursday morning will be stopped in the evening and resumed on Friday morning”, he said.

Giving details of the incident, Bhandari said a group of five people, including three women, had come from Mumbai on August 1 and were staying at a hotel near the Ganga.

“Three of them - Malroy Dante, Apoorva Kelkar and Madhushi Khursange, all aged 21, entered the Ganga waters for a swim around 2.30 pm on Wednesday. They got washed away in the fast flow in the Ganga due to heavy rainfall upstream for the last few days.

“Two others, who had come with them, Karan Mishra and Nisha Goswami, informed us about the incident and gave us contact details of the families of their washed away friends. We have informed their families,” he said.
