AGRA : A CID team of the West Bengal police, in plain clothes, was allegedly roughed up when it reached Gandhi Nagar under Gandhi Park police station of Aligarh on Friday night to arrest a BJP leader.

In 2017, the BJP leader, who was then a BJP Yuva Morcha leader, had declared a reward of Rs 11 lakh for anyone who brought the head of West Bengal chief minister Mamta Banerjee.. The remark came in the wake of lath charge on Hindu Jagran Manch activists in Birbhum.

“The CID team from West Bengal police had reached Gandhi Nagar in Aligarh on Friday night. The team was in plain clothes and had come for investigation regarding the old matter of 2017,” informed Mohsin Khan, circle officer (second), Aligarh.

“During the investigation, the West Bengal CID team got involved in a dispute with the locals. Tension mounted and on receiving information police reached the spot and brought the CID team safely to the police station. The team is safe and left for West Bengal on Saturday,” Khan stated, while clarifying that no arrest was made.

“The team from West Bengal has not submitted any complaint, yet the matter is being investigated,” he added. To recall, Dinesh Varshney, former ‘mandal adhyaksh’ (chief of a city sub-unit) of the BJP Yuva Morcha, had declared a reward of Rs 11 lakh for anyone bringing the head of the chief minister Mamta Banerjee. Varshney’s statement came after activists of Hindu Jagran Manch were lathicharged on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti in Birbhum, West Bengal in August 2017.

However, the BJP had distanced itself from Varshney’s comments. Cases were lodged in

West Bengal against Varshney, but he did turn up for hearing in courts and a CID team came to Aligarh on Friday night to serve notice to him for attachment under Criminal Procedure Code.

BJP leader and MP from Aligarh Satish Gautam too reached the house of Varshney and blamed local police for ‘mishandling’ the matter which resulted in chaos and confusion.

According to Gautam, police had not followed the proper procedure required in such cases. BJP leaders on reaching the Gandhi Nagar area made clear that no party workers could be taken away in such a manner.
