Special postal cover on Banarasi silk saree released

SPECIAL COVER ON BANARASI SILK SAREE WOULD GIVE IT A GLOBAL RECOGNITIO­N

VARANASI: In order to promote ‘One District, One Product (ODOP)’ scheme, postmaster general of Varanasi region, Krishna Kumar Yadav, released a special postal cover and a cancellati­on on the district’s ODOP product ‘Banarasi Silk Saree’ at a function organised in the commission­erate auditorium here on Wednesday. The special cover has been made by affixing Varanasi weaves stamp with Banarasi silk fabric. Yadav said that the special cover released on Banarasi silk saree would give it a global recognitio­n. “Through this culture, art and heritage of Varanasi would spread across the world. The silk of Varanasi is synonymous with splendor and regality across the world. The district offers a wide range of these products in different attractive looks, designs and patterns. This craft has been in practice for more than 500 years and today approximat­ely 29,802 weavers are associated with it. These products are GI tagged,” he said.

The postmaster general further said that department of posts had also issued special cover and cancellati­on on ODOP products, including carpet in Bhadohi, Zari Zardozi in Chandauli, Jute Wall Hangings in Ghazipur, Woolen Carpets in Jaunpur and Bindi (Tikuli) of Ballia.

Joint commission­er of industries, Umesh Kumar Singh, said that the aim of the ambitious ODOP scheme of the state government was to promote these special crafts and products. The department of posts has given it a more unique identity by placing the Banarasi silk saree on a special cover.
