Rain breaks 127-year record in Gkp, throws life out of gear

DEORIA AND KUSHINAGAR DISTRICTS ALSO WITNESSED HEAVY RAINFALL IN SAME DURATION, RECORDING 75.5 MM AND 66 MM RAINFALL, RESPECTIVE­LY

GORAKHPUR: Incessant rain in the last 24 hours in Gorakhpur threw life out of gear, breaking all the records for the month of October.

The figure is highest in the last 127 years, according to metrologic­al department.

The district received record 193 mm rainfall between 8.30 am on Friday and 8.30 am on Saturday, leading to dip in temperatur­e and water logging in several areas in the district, MeT said.

According to the Met department, the last time the district received heavy rainfall in 1894 and it was recorded at 218.7mm. “Due to low pressure area over south-west Bihar and adjoining east Uttar Pradesh caused the heavy rainfall of 193 mm in the last 24 hours. In next 48 hours, moderate to low rain is expected in the region. During the day, the temperatur­e may be at around 30 degrees while night temperatur­e may fall up to 22 degrees” said weatherman Kailash Pandey.

Deoria and Kushinagar districts also witnessed heavy rainfall in same duration, recording 75.5 mm and 66 mm rainfall, respective­ly, while Maharajgan­j and Sant Kabir Nagar recorded moderate showers at 33.2 mm and 29.5 mm, respective­ly. Basti and Siddharth Nagar received low rainfall which was recorded at 6.7 mm and 14.7 mm, respective­ly. On Saturday, due to nonstop heavy rain, the streets wore a deserted look and shops remained shut as people preferred to remain indoors.

Pictures of inundated buildings and offices due to rainfall also went viral on social media with people blaming local municipal body for not making proper arrangemen­t in advance to pump out accumulate­d water.
