Leopard injures seven people in one month in US Nagar’s Jaspur

-

RUDRAPUR: A female leopard in a populous area of Jaspur in US Nagar district has attacked at least seven people in a month, forest officials said, adding they have installed and changed location of cages five times in a bid to trap the big cat but failed.

“First incident of leopard attack was reported on September 7. After this incident we started monitoring and installed cages after permission of higher authorities. Four incidents of her attack have been reported in a month. We noticed that she only injures and doesn’t take life,” said Anil Chauhan, a forest officer of Patrampur range.

The female leopard has been lurking with her two cubs in Patrampur and Nizamgarh villages under Jaspur block area.

Chauhan said, “Female leopard has been roaming in the area and hides herself in sugarcane and paddy fields. When she crosses Jaspur and Patrampur road with her cub, she stays at the edge of the road waiting for her cubs to cross the road. If any commuter passes from that spot she attacks with a fear of the cubs’ safety.”

Last week, her cubs were hit by a bike rider accidently since then she has become furious. Female leopard is clever too, she doesn’t come near the cages despite the kill in the cages and stay away.

“We have changed locations of the cages five times in a bid to trap her but failed. She is very clever and moves half km away from the cages whenever we change the location. Only good thing is that she didn’t take human life. She attack s only to ensure her cubs safety and moves from the spot,” said Chauhan.

AG Ansari, a Ramnagar-based naturist, said, “The leopard will be very healthy to hund and there might have good prey base so the big cat is not harming humans. Her movement is momentarily, she will move somewhere soon. Forest officials must monitor her movement to avoid man-wild animal conflict.”
