26 HELD FOR GAMBLING IN KUMAON DIVISION

RUDRAPUR/HALDWANI: Police have arrested 26 people for alleged gambling and recovered over ₹12 lakh from them in Kumaon division since Saturday, an officer said on Sunday.

US Nagar police arrested 17 people for allegedly being involved in gambling in two separate incidents on Sunday and recovered ₹2.7 lakh from their possession.

In Nainital district, police busted a gambling racket and arrested alleged nine gamblers in Haldwani on Saturday night and recovered ₹10 lakh from them. Four of them are residents of US Nagar district and one is resident of Dehradun, said police.

“Police caught 11 persons from post office road in Kashipur for allegedly playing gamble on Sunday. ₹244,650 were recovered from them,” said DS Kunwar, senior superinten­dent of police (SSP), US Nagar.

He said in another incident police arrested six persons from Dineshpur for allegedly playing gamble on Sunday itself. ₹24,600 recovered from the gambling place. All were booked under gambling act and produced before the magistrate from where they all were sent to jail.

In Haldwani, police arrested nine alleged gamblers on Saturday night and recovered ₹10 lakh from them.

Shantanu Parashar, circle officer of Haldwani police, said, “We received a tip off that a new bar has opened near Mandi in Haldwani.

Gambling and betting was happening in this bar. On this, a police team was formed under the leadership of inspector Ramesh Saini.”

He said police raided a bar on Saturday night.

“Nine people were caught gambling in the bar. ₹9.91 lakh cash and nine mobiles were seized from the spot.”
