DEHRADUN: State police will focus more on migration from border areas, cybercrime and drug trafficking, said a top officer privy to details of the recently held 56th conference of the director generals of police (DGPs) and inspector generals of police (IGPs) in Lucknow.

The official, while speaking on condition of anonymity, said the aforementioned focal points were based on the issues discussed in the conference which was addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah and other senior officials of the country’s intelligence brass.

“During the important conference, many vital issues were discussed by the attendees who comprised 62 DGPs and IGPs of all the states and Union territories along with the director generals of the Central armed police forces and Central police organisations. The issues discussed were largely related to the internal security of the country which included drone related matters, left wing extremism, and development of border villages, cybercrimes and others.”

“However, the ones which were of significance especially to the Uttarakhand included the border issues with China, migration from the border areas, drug trafficking and cybercrime. Hence, working on the directions from the PM and home minister, the state will be focusing on these issues while working in coordination with the Central agencies,” said the official on the condition of anonymity.

He also said that during the conference the issue of the Afghanistan crisis post return of Taliban in the war-torn country and its ramifications was also discussed.

“Though it is a national security issue but all the state police heads were also asked to take appropriate actions on it to ensure internal security. Another issue which was much emphasised upon was drone related matters especially antirogue drone technology. The state police departments and the CAPFs were directed to take appropriate steps to tackle it as the use of drones is only going to increase in the near future which will include both the useful ones and the rogue ones,” said the official.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar who had gone to attend the conference, held a meeting with the state police officers at the state police headquarters in Dehradun, during which he informed them about the directions given in the conference and to work on the “vision of PM Modi towards better policing.”

During the meeting, he told that as per the directions of Modi on better implementation of Strict & Sensitive, Modern & Mobile, Alert & Accountable, Reliable & Responsive, Technosavvy & Trained (SMART) policing concept, the department will adjudge best police station in each district on the parameters of the concept.

When contacted, Kumar said, “The conference comprised several sessions in which many important issues pertaining to the internal security were discussed. Our state police will work on all those aspects based on directions given by Prime Minister Modi.”
