PRAYAGRAJ: Half the entrants to Allahabad University, who apply for hostel accommodation in the academic session 2021-22, will not get it.

This is because 50% of the vacant hostel rooms will be given to students who took admission in AU in the last session (2020-21). Since hostels were not allotted in 2020-21 because of Covid-19, therefore, this time, those students are also being accommodated by the AU administration.

“Because of the pandemic, no student in the session 2020-21 was given hostel accommodation. So, we have decided that these students too have to be accommodated this year. As a result, AU has decided that the number of vacant seats, in both hostels of AU and those of the trusts, will be divided equally among students of the last academic session and the one taking admission in the 2021-22 session,” said prof Jaya Kapoor, public relations officer, AU.

The 12 hostels of Allahabad University have a capacity to accommodate 2,486 students. At the same time, the three hostels of various trusts housing AU students have a capacity to accommodate 747 students. Thus, a total of 3,233 students can avail of the accommodation in the hostels.

However, just a few days back, AU took Hindu hostel on lease for a period of 29 years and 11 months at Rs 1 per annum. Apart from this, three new hostels of AU have also been constructed.

The same policy, pertaining to accommodating students of both sessions, will be implemented for both male and female students taking admission in AU. These students will be accommodated in single and double-occupancy accommodations spread in different hostels of AU and of the trusts.

“The merit of the individual student, pertaining to undergraduate admission test (UGAT) and his or her category will decide the allotment of room as the entire capacity of vacant rooms will be divided 50-50 among the fresh and last year’s entrants,” said the PRO.
