DEHRADUN: With date for the state assembly polls already announced, all political parties are brainstorming on finalising their candidates.

They are also chalking out a strategy to curb possible rebellion among their ranks who will miss out on party tickets.

Both the major parties ruling BJP and main opposition Congress are working on their respective moves for the same considering the history of state assembly polls in which those missing out on tickets have often fought against their party candidates or joined the ranks of a rival party.

The BJP, where there are at least five to six aspirants for ticket on each seat, has decided to announce their candidates during the period of filing nomination.

One of the senior party leaders, while speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “To curb a possible rebellion by leaders missing out on tickets, the party leadership would likely be announcing the names of candidates during the period of filing nomination which is from January 21-28.”

“Doing so, will give less time to those who could possibly rebel against the candidates and decide to fight on any other party’s ticket or independently,” said the leader.

He also said at present, there were at least “five to six names on each seat including those which already has sitting MLA from the party.”

“The names would be filtered out by the respective observers after which they would be then sent to state parliamentary board and then the party’s central parliamentary board which will take the final decision on the list of candidates,” said the leader.

BJP state president Madan Kaushik said the party will release its list of candidates after “mid-January.”

“The process is already going on in the party and the list of candidates would likely be announced after mid-January only,” said Kaushik.

The Congress, which has already finalised names of candidates on at least 45 out of total 70 seats, however, said, “The possibility of rebellion in the Congress is less in comparison to the BJP.”

“Our list will soon be released this month as half of the work is already done on it. Having said that the party is not worried about rebellion post ticket distribution because its possibility is less unlike that in BJP,” said Congress state general secretary Mathura Dutt Joshi.

RUDRAPUR: Police and Seema Sashastra Bal (SSB) personnel have been deployed in several parts of Rudrapur in US Nagar district a day after tension erupted after body parts of a cow and a calf were found in an empty plot.

An FIR was lodged against unnamed culprits on Monday evening on a complaint of Gau Raksha Dal president Virat Arya in Transit camp police station. The unnamed culprits were booked under the Uttarakhand Cow and its Progeny Protection Act, 2007and Arms Act.

“We registered an FIR against 10 to 12 unnamed people on the complaint of the Gau Raksha Dal president under cow and its progeny protection act. Police teams are looking for the culprits,” Sundaram Sharma, in charge of Transit camp police station, said on Tuesday.

Police claimed to have identified some culprits and teams have been formed to nab them. On the other hand, Gau Raksha Dal withdrew its ultimatum after a meeting with district magistrate (DM) Yugal Kishore Pant and senior superintendent of police (SSP) US Nagar DS Kunwar.

“More than one dozen suspects were picked up and now three culprits have been identified. They hail from Swar area of Rampur district of UP. They live here in a rental house and are butchers by profession. They are on the run and we are trying to nab them with help of Rampur police,” said Kunwar.

Tension had gripped Shyam Talkies and nearby areas of

Rudrapur on Monday after body parts of a cow and a calf were found in an empty plot in front of a banquet hall on Awas-Vikas road on Monday morning. Right-wing activists and locals gathered at the spot and demanded immediate action against the culprits. Agitators also clashed with police.

Slaughter of cows, bulls and calves is banned in the state under the Uttarakhand Cow and its Progeny Protection Act, 2007.

Under this act, there is a provision for 10 years imprisonment or ₹10,000 fine or both for cow slaughter or selling cow meat.

led by Pant and Kunwar. Apart from this, an order was issued by the DM for ban of mobile internet for 24 hours in US District but order was withdrawn after some hours.

Police claimed to have seized a car used by the suspects. “Why the culprit threw body parts of a cow and a calf and what was their motive will be known after their arrest. However, police are on high alert,” said police officer Kunwar.

Congress state vice president Suryakant Dhasmana alleged that just ahead of the state election, attempts were being made to polarise the state’s peaceful atmosphere. “And everybody knows who benefits from such polarisation,” he said.

Anil Chauhan, state president of BJP farmer wing, said: “It was a conspiracy of some anti-social elements. If the Congress blames the BJP for such incidents, it shows Congress’s sick mentality. The Congress will get suitable reply in the coming election for such a mindset.”
