RUDRAPUR: Fed up with violent behaviour of his drug addict son, a man from Champawat has had put his 24-yea-old son in a specially made iron cage.

People who saw the man in a cage in a busy market in Tanakpur area of Champawat district were surprised and shocked. The parents of the man put him in a cage, with his hands tied and then took him home on a vehicle, on which the cage was put with the help of passers-by and mechanics of a nearby workshop.

“My son is a drug addict and harasses us for money to buy drugs. If we don’t, he beats me and my wife. He has made our life miserable. We admitted him to a rehabilitation centre and asked police to help, but nothing changed. We put him in a cage to protect ourselves till he gets normal,” said his father, who works as a street vendor in Tanakpur area.

The father originally hails from Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh but has been living in Tanakpur area to earn his livelihood. He said his 24-year-old son has been a drug addict for some years and he had admitted him to a rehab centre but it didn’t help much.

“My son continued to beat us and misbehave with us for money so that he could buy drugs. We couldn’t take it further. So, I got this cage made and put him into it so that he can’t harm us. If I hadn’t done this, I would have feared for my life”, he said.

The father said two months ago, he had put his son in the cage for two weeks. “We provided him food in the cage. When he promised not to repeat any such behaviour again, we released him,” he said.

The father said when his son repeated his violent behaviour on Sunday and started harassing him for money in the market, he requested passers-by and mechanics of nearby workshops to hold him and help in tying his hands.

“When his hands were tied, I rushed home to bring the cage. After half-an-hour, I returned with my wife and the cage and put him again in to it,” he said. The man then took his son in the cage to his home.

“I got the idea of making a cage for my son from a newspaper article in which a man in China had put his son who was having epileptic episodes in to a cage,” said the father.
