Covid cases decline to 167k in India, positivity rate now 11.69%

NEW DELHI: India registered a sharp decline in daily Covid-19 cases on Tuesday as 167,059 new infections were recorded in the last 24 hours, the health ministry data showed.

India on Monday reported 209,918 fresh Covid-19 cases and 959 fatalities.

According to the health ministry, there was a decline in the daily positivity rate to 11.69% from 15.77% on Monday. The weekly positivity rate also dipped to 15.25% from 15.75% on Monday.

India’s active caseload currently stands at 1,743,059 while the active cases account for 4.20% of total cases.

With 254,076 recoveries from the infection reported in the last 24 hours, the cumulative recoveries mounted to 39,230,198.

The recovery rate of the country has also improved to 94.60% from 94.37% on Monday.

However, with the addition of 1,192 new fatalities, the Covid death toll in the country climbed to 496,242.

As many as 1,428,672 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours to detect the presence of the virus.

Meanwhile, under the ongoing nationwide Covid-19 vaccinatio­n drive, 1,666,848,204 vaccine doses have been administer­ed so far. Till Sunday, more than 75% of India’s adult population was fully vaccinated against Covid-19, the Union health ministry said, as the country continues to expand its immunisati­on coverage in the face of growing challenges posed by the pandemic the world over.

When seen against India’s estimated population of 940 million adults, this translates to 95% of all adults in the country having received at least one dose of the vaccine (75.1% fully vaccinated, and 19.9% partially). Furthermor­e, 46 million adolescent­s between the age of 15 and 18 years – constituti­ng around 62% of this population group – have received a single jab, while another 10 million shots have been administer­ed as a third “precaution­ary dose” to those considered most vulnerable to the disease.
