Fear, panic grip the parents of students stranded in Ukraine

RUDRAPUR: The parents of students from the state studying in Ukraine are worried after Russia’s invasion of that country. They are trying to contact their children through the social media to get updates about well being.

Around 8 students from US Nagar are studying medicine in Ukraine.

Vihar in Rudrapur, said, “We were worried about our son who studies in Ternopil but after the attack we are in panic. We are contacting through the social media but we are very worried how we will contact him if the social media also breaks down in Ukraine.”

Javed Ansari, also from Preet Vihar, who is pursuing medical education in Ternopil State Medical University, said on WhatsApp, “Our university is near the border of Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. Indian government should take immediate steps to shift us to these countries, since airport has been closed here, but we can go there by road and from these countries fly to India.”

He said he has come out to purchase items of daily need but shops and super markets are running out of the stock as people are hoarding such items.

“I have heard people saying our debit and credit cards may not work due to cyber attacks in the coming days. A sense of panic is spreading here among Indian students. I have been here for the last four years. I am used to but those students who arrived here in January they are feeling very panicky,” he said.

Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said: “The state government is committed to safely bring back every Uttarakhan­di student stranded in Ukraine. We are in constant touch with the ministry of external affairs in this regard.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Thursday, forcing hundreds to flee for their lives in that country.
