PRAYAGRAJ: A 22-year-old youngster from Prayagraj, Ankit Kumar Verma, has been appointed regional ambassador for India by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) - Tunza Eco-Generation (TEG). In his new role, Ankit will raise awareness about climate change, importance of environmental conservation and need to safeguard environmental treasures. He will work with the TEG on various environmental awareness programmes till September 2022.

This time, 25 ambassadors’ term has been extended while 35 new ambassadors from around the globe, including seven from India, have been appointed and given a chance to represent their countries and regions.

An undergraduate student of Institute of Engineering and Rural technology (IERT)-Prayagraj, Ankit is interested in environmental activities and wants to put his efforts in changing environmental conditions for the better, after getting inspired in this direction by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech at COP26— 2021 UN Climate Change Conference held in Glasgow—and thought of applying for the position of regional ambassador of Tunza.

“In February 2003, the governing council of UNEP had adopted a long-term strategy for engaging young people in environmental activities and in the work of UNEP. The strategy was entitled the Tunza Youth Strategy. The word “Tunza” means to treat with care or affection” in Kiswahili (a sub-regional language of Eastern Africa). The overall Tunza Concept is built around this theme,” explained Ankit, a resident of Kareli locality of Sangam city.

“I want to change the climatic conditions by mixing and utilising technology to it,” said Ankit, who also has his name in the India Book of Records and World Book of Records, London, as the country’s youngest writer in field of psychology. He is also a Google developer lead.
