SRINAGAR: Three terrorists who were allegedly involved in the killing of a sarpanch in Khonmoh area and two police officers in Jammu & Kashmir’s Srinagar were gunned down in an encounter in Nowgam area early on Wednesday, police said.

The terrorists were associated with The Resistance Front (TRF), an outfit affiliated with Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). They were reportedly planning to carry out an attack on security forces on the national highway, police added.

Providing details, Kashmir inspector general of police (IGP) Vijay Kumar said the encounter took place after security forces launched a search and cordon operation in Nowgam, following inputs about the possible presence of terrorists in the area.

The operation was launched by police and 50 Rashtriya Rifles and later joined by personnel belonging to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

The operation turned into an encounter after the terrorists fired upon the forces, Kumar said. “During the operation, as the search party proceeded towards the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists fired indiscriminately at the party, which retaliated effectively, leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, three categorized terrorists were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter,” he added.

The terrorists were identified as Adil Nabi Teli of Galchibal Chandhara in Pampore, Shakir Ahmad Tantray of Ronipora (isn’t it ratnipora? Please check) village in Shopian and Yasir Ahmad Wagay of Kujer Frisal in Kulgam.
