PRAYAGRAJ : In a move that would benefit over 23,000 students, the Allahabad University (AU) has decided to keep its Central Library open even on Sundays as well as most holidays, said officials of the central varsity.

“The decision has been taken to keep the Central Library open for students from 8am to 9pm from Monday to Saturday and also keep it accessible to students from 10am to 6pm on Sundays and holidays. A notification in this regard has been issued and the new system has been implemented with immediate effect,” said AU librarian BK Singh. He said from Monday to Saturday, the Central Library would function as a lending and reading library while on Sundays and holidays it would function as a reading library only with no lending of books being undertaken by it.

To note, the central library was closed during the entire Corona period. The students were continuously demanding opening of the library. Even on Monday, students yet again demonstrated in front of the library. They also submitted a memorandum to librarian BK Singh demanding that the library be kept open 24 hours a day as being done at most top higher and technical educational institutions of the country.

The matter reached vicechancellor Prof Sangita Srivastava who gave her approval, a senior AU official privy to the development said.

Singh said though the library would be open for students on weekdays and Sunday, it will remain completely closed on Republic Day, Independence Day, Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary besides festivals like Holi, Eid-ul-Fitr, Vijayadashami, Diwali and Christmas.
