M Tech in biomedical engineering back in IIITA in new avatar
PRAYAGRAJ : Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A) is all set to restart its M Tech course in Biomedical engineering from this year in a new avatar.
Institute’s department of applied sciences has announced the commencement of admissions to the said course for JulyDec 2023 session.
This cutting-edge course aims to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the dynamic field of biomedical engineering, say IIIT-A officials aware of the development.
In 2012, the institute had introduced a five-year integrated M Tech in Biomedical engineering. Graduates having interdisciplinary background built up from those earlier batches found success in various sectors, including healthcare, IT, electronics and instrumentation and medicine.
Many students pursued careers as scientific researchers in esteemed institutions in India and abroad, such as IITs, NITs, IISc-Bangalore, John Hopkins Institute, NTU-Singapore and others after passing the course.
However, in 2015 the course was discontinued by the institute due to what at the time was termed as “unavoidable circumstances”.
But at a time when most of the patents filed by the institute in recent years have come from the field of Biomedical engineering, this programme has now been rejuvenated as a twoyear course, say officials.
Director, IIIT-A, Prof Mukul Sharad Sutaone envisions the new course as a pioneering initiative that would combine the principles of engineering and medicine to address the complex challenges of healthcare.
“The programme in its new avatar aims at cultivating a new generation of skilled professionals who possess a deep understanding of inculcating the knowledge of IT in Biomedical
sciences for effectively contributing to the society and thinking of new innovations for forming a nurturing ecosystem for the future generations,” he said.
GATE qualified candidates via process of CCMT—a centralised counselling process conducted for admission to postgraduate programs based on candidates’ performance in GATE exam—has been set as the eligibility criteria for admission to the MTech Biomedical engineering at IIIT-Allahabad.
Candidates having BTech degree in Biotechnology, Biomedical engineering, /electrical engineering, instrumentation engineering, computer sciences/ IT or mechanical engineering, civil engineering besides BPharm and allied areas are eligible to apply.
Candidates from MSc physics, biophysics, chemistry, life sciences and allied areas are also encouraged to apply for the course, say officials.
The curriculum encompasses a diverse range of subjects, including biomedical instrumentation, Bio-MEMS and microfluidics, medical imaging, biomaterials, biomechanics, and bioinformatics, etc.
